The Victorian Government is investing $1.85 billion in 100 Next Generation Trams and proposed new tram maintenance and stabling facility in Melbourne’s west.
The project will include a minimum of 65 per cent local content, supporting up to 1,900 local jobs including in the wider economy.
Passenger benefits
Passengers will benefit from a range of new features, including:
- Space for more passengers than Melbourne’s high-floor trams
- Latest accessibility features to make it easier for everyone to travel
- On-board energy storage to reduce power use and network costs.
The Next Generation Trams will enable the retirement of older high-floor trams, making our public transport network more accessible for all Victorians.
Engagement with accessibility, passenger representatives and technical stakeholders will be part of the tram design process, to ensure it meets the needs of all Victorians.
Tram maintenance facility
A proposed new state-of-the-art tram maintenance and stabling facility will be built in Melbourne’s west to house 100 new Next Generation Trams.
The Department of Transport has purchased a vacant site in Maidstone at the corner of Hampstead and Williamson Roads, and will lead its development on behalf of the Victorian government. The site will be developed into the proposed new tram maintenance and stabling facility and several other essential service projects to support community needs.
The Maidstone community will benefit from:
- an enhanced local area
- a more reliable, accessible and modern tram fleet
- 280 jobs in construction, ongoing maintenance and the supply chain
Early works on the tram maintenance facility are expected to start in 2023, subject to planning and heritage approvals.
Shortlisted tram manufacturers
The Victorian Government has invited a select group of shortlisted manufacturers to submit proposals to design, build and maintain the Next Generation Trams, which will be made in Victoria.
The contract to build the new trams will be awarded following an evaluation process in early 2022.
